To BB or CC? The difference between BB and CC creams.

To BB or CC? The difference between BB and CC creams.

The BB (beauty balm) cream, and more recently the CC (colour correcting) cream, are an import of the sophisticated and innovative Korean cosmetics industry. The term and the various formulas of BB and CC creams have been circulating skin care and cosmetics market for a little while now, and to be honest, initially I had little to no interest in them. What on earth is a BB cream, let alone a CC cream? And what on earth do they do?

It wasn’t until I sought an alternative to the quick but at-times-chalky mineral make-up option that I first toyed with a few different BB cream options and choices, and I have been strangely hooked.

I like to think of both BB’s and CC’s as a big cosmetics smoothie. Imagine a clan of white-cloaked scientists rummaging through your bathroom cabinet and whipping up an early morning dose of all your favourite creams in one cute little package that only requires one application and minimal blending.

I should note here that BB and CC creams are not replacements for foundations. Nor are they like tinted moisturizers that are simply super light moisturisers with a slight tint and possibly some SPF

BB Creams
BB creams amp up the tinted moisturiser formula, offer light / medium coverage, SPF AND various added skin care benefits and skin treatments which will vary from brand to brand. The skin care benefits of a BB cream can range from everything from potent antioxidants, skin plumping hyraluaric acid and enzymes to shut down pigment formation to name just a few. Which you chose will be up to your personal preference and possible skin concerns. Put simply, a BB is 5 face creams with one application.

CC Creams
A CC Cream, very similar to a BB, shifts its treatment focus toward colour correcting of the skin tone, be it redness or sallowness. Coloured tints and light reflecting particles contained within the CC cream formula diffuse the overall appearance of the skin . In addition to color correcting, a CC cream may contain sunscreen, anti aging properties and collagen boosters like its BB cream sister.

BB’s and CC creams come in a light, medium or dark shades, which will vary from brand to brand. Think of them as tints that lightly ‘airbrush’ and melt-in to even out the skin, rather give the highly polished finish of a good foundation. This aspect alone makes them much more user friendly to the consumer who can be easily confused as to how to pick the right shade for their skin type and tone.

As a recent convert to the La Roche Posay BB cream, for skin sensitivity reasons in addition to mild curiosity and ‘research’, I will say that for a quick no fuss morning beautifying ritual either a BB or CC cream are a godsend. I am 30 and ashamedly only just now wearing sunscreen daily, and quite honestly only because it’s already within my BB cream.

If on certain occasions I am seeking a little more coverage I will layer (over the top of my bb cream) concealor and sometimes a small amount of foundation where I need it.

Just as my morning smoothie is full of ultra hydrating coconut water, anti inflammatory omega 3’s, sugar stabilizing protein and B vitamins to give me heaps of goodness in one jar, so too can your BB and CC creams deliver considerable value on one little tube.
